Day 2 ...

It is so much fun to see God work through projects and people! Last year while we were in the DR, our VBS interpreter, Estella, (who is an interpreter and so much more to us!!!!) told us about hygiene kits for teenage girls and asked if our church might be able to provide some next year for girls in the batays. The kits are reusable monthly cycle materials for girls who do not have access to the disposable materials that we use in the United States. Each kit takes a couple hours to make and the materials cost about $10.

After returning last year, I mentioned the need to a few of our Trinity sewers. That was all it took!  About 12 of our Trinity ladies (and a couple of their moms) set to work sewing. This year we brought over 100 kits that were created, stuffed, and prayed over by ladies and teenage girls at Trinity!!!

On Sunday, I showed Estella all of the hygiene kits that were created with such care and love. I cannot tell you how excited she was about all the kits. She had tears in her eyes and asked me to tell you how precious these kits will be to the girls and how much it means to them for someone to recognize that they are important.

Yesterday afternoon I watched as Estella talked with 16 teenage girls about hygiene care, their monthly cycles, pregnancy, and more. She had me demonstrate how to use the kits while she explained in Spanish. She even answered questions that the girls were asking about using the kits at school and changing out the flannel pads. The girls were so attentive as she explained and so excited about getting the kits. Two of them even asked to have an extra kit to take home for their sisters. Today, Estella and Sara repeated the same process with 20 more teenage girls. I have seen a lot in the DR, but this is by far one of the most remarkable and special things that I have experienced here. I shared with the girls on Monday that ladies at our church had taken time to sew and pray over each one of their kits because we know that they are special and important young women. Trinity, you have done a wonderful thing and provided something to these girls that will be life changing for them!

Today at construction was full of painting the whole day and playing with kids. We started off by painting the stairwells. Then the rest of us split up and went to finish off the rooms on the third floor as a whole. While I was painting with Evans, who is one of the workers, he and I were listening to music and having a somewhat of a karaoke time. Both of us grabbed our paint brushes and acted like they were microphones. During our lunch break we went outside the school and played with the children, and they were all ecstatic to see us. There is this brother and sister named Oliver and Crystal and they are my new amigos. They came out of there house today and ran and gave me a hug and called me buddy instead of amigo. Tomorrow will be another tough day of work, but we can handle it and thank you for all the prayers, we are all out here changing lives and putting smiles on peoples faces.
